January 18, 2006
My goodness, so much has happened since my last newsletter. Christmas and New Year's celebrations have come and gone. I got to see both of my grandsons at Christmas and that alone was great! I make the kids go to the bathroom so we can mark and track their growth measurement on the back of the door -- for the first time Jared is taller than I am (I told him it was only because he had on new shoes and I was in my stocking feet). The next time we measure him I won't be able to get by with that explanation. Dick Clark and I had a great time New Year's Eve, I hope you did too.
Great things are in the works at www.cherylsquiltcorner.com ! BOM's are growing here. We've got some new and great ones coming to the online store very soon -- keep clicking back so you don't miss out on the latest additions.
Our BOM's come complete with instructions, patterns, colored picture, colored chart so you'll know exactly which piece of fabric was picked for each pattern piece (no guessing or spending valuable time trying to figure out 'just where does this piece of fabric go?' ... and of course, all the necessary fabrics! All you'll need to provide is the time and thread. Once your BOM arrives in the mail you can begin working on it in a matter of minutes!
Just last night I posted this new one!
"JOYS OF WINTER" will be ready for it's first block to be shipped starting February 1st. Be one of the first to sign up for this totally charming quilt that features whimsical Snowmen, Angels, Gingerbread people and Santa's relishing each month in the "JOYS OF WINTER". Once you order your first block, with your permission, we put you on the auto-ship program with your credit card or with payment monthly through PayPal. Then the first part of each month the next block you need will be automatically mailed to you. 13 month program, 74 x 88.
Another great BOM here at www.cherylsquiltcorner.com is the "HOT CHOCOLATE CLUB". This is a really fun quilt showcasing darling snowmen each month with a unique twist -- they each have their own cup of Hot Chocolate in hand. Have you ever tried to ice skate or snow ski with a cup of Hot Chocolate in your hand? I couldn't do it but these precious snowmen can! 12 month program, 58 x 59.

HOT FLASHES IN BATIKS! Hate to cut up that stash of batiks you've acquired - we'll help you preserve that stash and send you new batiks each month to make this stunning fun quilt. Each month you'll receive a white on white background along with 2 fat quarters (1 being a focus batik) and complete instructions to make this HOT design glow. This 13 month BOM program will produce a finished quilt 69 x 87 and uses one batik throughout as the focus fabric as well as the outside border.
I've had several emails wanting to participate in the Vintage Valentine BOM. Unfortunately, I had to close it due to the availability of fabrics on hand to obtain that special vintage look and appeal. I've been searching for more fabric so I can open it again. If we can find the necessary fabrics to reopen it and if you're interested in participating in this fantastic quilt that is a vision of vintage romance drop me an email at cherylas@ptsi.net . Mary said the only way she would do this quilt was if we could preserve the vintage flavor as created by the designer and I think we have done just that. I will not reopen it to new participants unless we can continue with its beautiful vintage look.
For those of you that participated in the Second Saturday pieced and applique mystery -- gather up those finished quilt tops made from those block patterns, bring them to the shop, and join in for a great afternoon of fun, prizes, and surprises on the Second Saturday in February. The party will begin at 1 p.m., don't be late.
Now for a great quilting tip: PRESS AS YOU GO. Press the units of your block as they are constructed. If a block has many intersecting seams, it is much simpler to press them as you go, rather than to wait and press them all at the end, when the iron may force some areas in the wrong direction. Pressing as you go also makes assembling units much easier and more precise blocks.

Just arrived --- the first pattern for the "HOT CHOCOLATE CLUB" BOM. If you've already decided to do this charming quilt, congratulations, you will not be disappointed! This is one of the quickest and cutest snow people quilts I've seen in some time. We'll be working on getting the first kit, "Man In The Moon", in the mail as soon as we can this week. I totally finished the first three blocks this weekend - I wish I could tell you which ONE was my favorite but I can't pick just one, they're all darling.
If you haven't signed up yet, there's still time as you can join at anytime. I'll try to get my finished blocks photographed and posted to the website soon.
~~~
Now for a great quilting tip--- I have a great saying in a frame that I sometimes forget, "The best antiques are old friends." We should all take a minute to let those best antiques know just how much we cherish their friendships. I am very fortunate in that a lot of my friends are quilters of all ages. We share so much of our lives with each other as we stitch pieces of fabric together into what will someday be our legacy for other generations to hold dear. Even though most of the women in my family are not quilters, I cherish them all as dear friends, including the ones that are antiques!
Our deer will be watching and waiting for you in front of the shop on Friday and Saturday during the REINDEER HOP.
Have a great week!
November 20, 2005
Good Sunday evening! With Thanksgiving this week I know many of you will be having lots of family and friends coming. My Mom and sister will be coming and I know we'll have a great time.
Lots of new happenings are coming to www.cherylsquiltcorner.com very soon, a new BOM, Reindeer Shop Hop, 2005 Second Saturday party, online Needlecase Kit special...read on for more details.
We're working very hard on a new Block of the Month that will start on December 1st, "The Hot Chocolate Club". Each month we will be offering a kit that will include all the fabrics and pattern during a 12-month program. This charming quilt features darling snow people, each holding a cup of Hot Chocolate and goes together so quickly. I know "ya'll" will love it as much as we do here. Join now so you'll be first on the list to receive your Hot Chocolate Club Block of the Month. At the end of the program you'll have a great quilt top. All you'll need to add is your time, and what a great time you'll have creating this quilt top. Wouldn't this make a great year long Christmas gift for that dear quilter in your family! I couldn't think of a better gift to receive as each kit arrives all year long.
December 2nd and 3rd, 2005, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., we'll be participating in the first ever "REINDEER HOP". Four area shops are joining together to offer you a chance to play Santa Bingo and give everyone tons of opportunities to receive gift certificates worth $10 each. Instant on the spot gift certificates for line bingos WILL happen during the "REINDEER HOP".
Gather your quilting friends together into one car and have even more chances to win. Three in your carpool and you'll each get one extra bingo piece, five in your carpool and you'll each get two extra bingo pieces. For each $10 purchase, before tax, you'll earn an extra bingo piece. Each blackout bingo card will earn the holder $40 in gift certificates, $10 from each shop that will be mailed out after the completion of the hop. Participating shops are: Quilted Treasures, Liberal, Kansas; Prairie Trails Quilting, Turpin, Oklahoma; Down Home Quilts, Dumas, Texas; and of course, Cheryl's Quilt Corner, Guymon, Oklahoma. With four participating shops and only 120 miles from Liberal to Dumas this hop is entirely do-able in only one day.
May Basket Needle Case kits, not only will you receive a 4th kit free when you order 3 kits but they are now discounted by $2 each. These make great gifts for close quilting friends. Hurry while kits are available in several different colors.
Have you been participating in our Second Saturday mystery applique or pieced BOM's? If you have and you've completed each block as they've arrived, you're in great shape. If you don't have your blocks finished yet you still have time. Mark your calendars now for the Second Saturday in February, 2006 for our in-store party. At 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2006 come to the shop, bring your finished quilt and join in some really great surprises.
My internet service provider and I have had some problems since Nov. 12th that has left me a little gun-shy now that I've finally gotten my computer back. Please ignore the date on the home page where it states the date the last time the online store was updated. Until I can get one of those computer whiz kids here and go through things with me one on one I'm not anxious to try and update my locally housed web pages. The online store pages are housed at Quiltropolis so they were never in any danger. Hopefully, very soon, my computer life will be back to its normal choas.
Now for another quilting tip... Because of my latest computer nightmares I have learned a very valuable lesson...back up your computer's hard drive to floppy disks often, if not every single time you add something new, especially your pictures. All those pictures, directions, lesson plans, ideas..., everything can be gone in a flash, never to be seen again unless you have your files on floppy disks.
Have a great week, enjoy Thanksgiving, family and friends...
Now for a great quilting tip --
If you're piecing long, skinny points, as in a Mariner's Compass, don't start stitching at the skinny point. Begin sewing at a wider point if possible, stitching into the sharp point. You can control the seam and the point for the last couple of inches with a stiletto, keeping the fabric flat and the point lined up.
Quilting Tip for Today:
Position cushioned mats on the floor at the cutting table and ironing board; your legs and feet will thank you. These mats are often used in kitchens and restaurants to alleviate fatique from standing for long periods of time. I found the ones I have at my quilting machine at Sam's, I've seen them at Home Depot, and Walmart. For heavy-duty cushioning, check with a professional kitchen supply store. I guarantee you they'll make a world of difference, they're not that expensive, and will last a very long time.
The second BOM is for all the appliqué lovers out there. The delicate appliquéd shapes inspired by vintage valentines mixed with faded fabrics will create a romantic style that embodies our nostalgia for days gone by. Now for a great quilting tip------
A great tool that Mary uses is pant hangers. After she finishes her appliqué blocks, she presses them and then clips them in one of those plastic pant hangers. This method will keep them all together as you work on your quilt top, keep them straight and they won't wrinkle using this method of storage. Thank you Mary for a great quilting tip.
Now for a great quilting tip -- but today's tip is 2 for 1!
One of my very good friends, Marjie, has a great filing system that isn't too difficult to implement. As soon as she gets home with every piece of fabric she purchases she takes a little time to mark it. To the cut end selvage she pins a simple little note that contains the following information: where she bought it, date of purchase, amount of yardage in that piece of fabric, and how much it cost per yard. As we all know here, rarely does Miss Marjie know exactly what she's going to make out of that piece of fabric she totally loves when she makes her purchase -- so she usually purchases 6 yards! Sounds like a ton of fabric, but she rarely comes back desperately looking for just a half yard more to be able to finish any project. She actually gets two quilts in one as she always has plenty for her quilt top and then uses the extra to make wonderful pieced matching backings that add so much to her quilts.
Quilting is such a wonderful part of my life and I know it is for all quilters. Consider showing a child the joys you reap with needle in hand -- it'll be something they will remember and take with them throughout their entire life. I have already received a call today from my little 5th grade neighbor girl, Kassidi, she'll be down later this afternoon as we continue working on her doll she must make totally by hand for the Oklahoma Land Run reenactment later this month. Her mother, who does not even sew on buttons, was pleasantly surprised that her required sock doll looks like a real doll and not socks!
I must return to the quilting machine as I have a couple of quilts to get quilted for the Quilts of Valor for wounded soldiers from the war.
Thanks for stopping by. Your business is greatly appreciated, whether you come by the shop or visit the online store... "thank ya'll and come back soon."
'Til then, happy quilting, happy shopping, & happy hopping,
enjoy the change in seasons........
FabShop Hop bunny hint -- check out the Batiks!
July 28, 29, 30, & 31 for the Top of Texas Quilt Shop Hop. There will be eleven shops participating, tons of fund, surprises, sales, treats, and more. Click to take a closer look at last year's Top of Texas Shop Hop.
September 8, 9, 10, & 11 for the Prairie Stars Quilt Shop Hop. This first time hop will consist of nine quilt shops. Hitch your wagon to our stars as you discover new quilt shops on your adventure across the vast prairie of the Oklahoma Panhandle, Southwest Kansas and Southeast Colorado.
Both shop hop pages will be updated as more information becomes available. Start making your plans to get a car load of quilting friends together and join in both weekends - no kids, no games, no cooking, just great friends, great fun, great adventures.
One of the quilt guilds I belong to, Panhandle Piecers, is making quilts for the wounded soldiers from the Iraqi war. We hope to have 25 finished by the end of April. The people in Boise City, Oklahoma have contributed approximately 50-60 to this great cause. When we discussed this project at our January meeting I went home so excited about being able to do this I had a hard time getting to sleep that night - my quilting brain was racing 100 mph. I have one quilt top finished with the second one very close to being ready to go. If you'd like a little more information on this worldwide project you can read all about it at the following web sites:
http://www.houseofhanson.com/qov.html
http://www.quiltsforsoldiers.com/
These young men and women have done their very best for us in the fight for freedom, it's only right that we should do our best for them and let them know how much we appreciate them.
Now for a great quilting tip ---
Are you like I am, just can't throw it away, give it away, or sell it on ebay... you've run out of closet space, drawer space, places to stash it or hide it. You know those scraps seem to be just like rabbits, they just seem to multiply. You go through them periodically, divide them into fabric types, color groups, projects you want to make (someday). You use plastic boxes to keep "it all together", wicker baskets that look pretty on a shelf and also allows air to circulate, but how else can you store fabric (or in some cases disguise it) yet be space-efficient storage.
Here's a great idea for storing "scraps" (and I'll use that term loosely!).
Try this: use hanging sweater or shoe bags. Fold and store scraps by color on the sweater "shelves." You can also fold or roll fabric and store it in the shoe pockets. Shoe bags can be hung in a closet or on the back of a door. Once again your storing vertically. Those clothes that were taking up that rod space in the closet what clothes? Those ladies at the domestic violence center will be thrilled to have your donation, you get a tax credit, and more fabric storage space! Win, Win, Win!
Next Saturday is Third Saturday and the beginning of Mary's newest appliqué class. If you've not signed up it's not too late, just give us a call or come by. You can see the first block on the home page, www.cherylsquiltcorner.com .
Cheryl's Quilt Corner would like to celebrate Valentine's Day by enclosing a special surprise on all orders over $25 starting February 12, 2005 until midnight central time on February 16, 2005. Type in "valentine" into the comment box at checkout and we'll send you a great gift that quilters are sure to love. You must use the special code to receive the free gift. Don't miss this opportunity to build your stash, and give yourself a wonderful Valentine's gift! (Special surprise ends Wednesday, February 16th at Midnight Central time.)
Now for a great quilting tip ---
Everyone of us has color preferences and they become quite obvious when you look at your fabric stash! Every so often you should take a fabric inventory and see where things stand. Most quilters will find that they are heavy on several colors and more than lacking in others. Be objective with your review and the next time you go to the quilt shop try to buy a couple of fabrics to help round out your palette in addition to buying fabrics for that specific project.
Good Saturday morning to all. Here in the Oklahoma panhandle it is currently 50 outside but with that ever present wind, the chill factor is 37, not too bad, unless you have to walk, then you might want to put some rocks in your pockets first.
I just wanted to send out a quick note to remind everyone that one week from today is Second Saturday for February. New blocks are posted to the website and ready to be mailed out on Monday for those of you that are participating via online ordering. Click here to order your blocks. For those of you that are able to come to the monthly quilt party, we're going to be ready for you too. Please email or give me a call to let me know that you'll be here so I'll have your block ready for you -- plus I want to have enough goodies, hum........
Now for a great quilting tip ---
With the stress that comes from being pulled in and out of fabric repeatedly during hand piecing, appliqué, or quilting, it's no wonder that kinks, tangles, fraying, and knots occur even in the finest threads. Mary Howell loves a product that conditions thread so it will slide through fabric like butter, with hardly any wear and tear. Simply run a strand of thread over the surface of "Thread Heaven" conditioner to coat it with a silky-smooth layer of silicone, and then watch snarls and tangles melt away! "Thread Heaven" is available in the Notions and Other "Gotta-haves" department.
Have a great weekend.......
Good Saturday morning. The sun is shining here in Guymon, Oklahoma, and, of course, the wind is blowing - typical for the Oklahoma panhandle. Yesterday the park next door had quite a few kids in it after school since it was 70 here, what a change from the 8 only two weeks ago! Will Rogers once said if you don't like the weather in Oklahoma, wait a minute!
This morning I want to tell you about a new class that has been scheduled.
Mary's Block One
"Flowers From My Garden" Quilt - the pattern Mary will be using.
The first class will meet 2 - 4 p.m. on the Third Saturday, February 19, 2005, then the Third Saturday of each month until you get your quilt top finished. You'll work on one block each month at the beginning with the option to do your blocks by hand or by machine. As the year progresses your confidence and expertise will increase with Mary's help and you'll soon be whipping appliqué out all over the place. Each monthly class will be $15, this will include the pattern to make the 16" x 16" blocks and be given at the beginning of each class. The quilt pictured above will finish to be 90" x 90". All enrollees will be given a 15% discount on fabrics purchased to use in this class - yardages and supplies needed are available at Cheryl's Quilt Corner at the time of enrollment. Space is limited so enroll now to insure your seat!
*** SOME OF THE NEW FABRIC ARRIVALS ***
from Ricky Tims -- CONVERGENCE FABRIC
All sorts of cute little fish, starfish, and seahorses can be found in this charming fabric. Wouldn't this make a great Easy-Breezy quilt or perhaps a Yellow Brick Road quilt for that little one.
Now for a great quilting tip ---
Now that you've gotten that quilt top finished, don't put your fabric away until you've cut the binding and a hanging sleeve (if the quilt will be hung). This will save you from digging fabric and thread out later for these finishing steps or from accidentally using it on another project before your top is quilted. Sew and press the binding strips as you piece the quilt, then label and store them or place them in a bag to stay with the top until you are ready for them. Make a sleeve when you are cutting and piecing the back, making it about 2 inches shorter than the quilt width to allow for quilting take-up. Making the sleeve from the backing fabric makes it unobtrusive and gives your quilt a quality touch.
